The Illuminati were founded as the Bavarian Illuminati on 1 May 1776 by Jesuit-taught Adam Weishaupt, the University of Ingolstadt’s first lay Catholic canon law professor. Given his ties to the Jesuits, their founding mission to restore the Roman Pope’s “temporal” (read political) power and the threat Masonry presented to said power, some have concluded the Illuminati were founded as a means for the Vatican, now no stranger secret society connections, to infiltrate those elements of Illuminism not officially under its auspices. As most people realize, the Illuminati, like the Knights of Columbus, were modeled on the Freemasons. The Illuminati successfully allured Freemasons from their lodges.
